PAPER or PLASTIC……?

A new year is coming and it's always fun to try something different.
I thought I'd share a couple of projects some of us have tried using alternate materials.
The first ones are the fantastic paper weavings Langdon wove using high quality wrapping paper.

Langdon cut the paper into 3/4 " strips using a ruler and rotary cutter. She threaded linen at 6 epi and wove the highlight colors in between. She made 2 wall hangings 24" x 46". They are hanging and they look GREAT!!
Next really fascinating project was woven by Susan W. She recycled used coffee filters by cutting them into strips, SPINNING THEM into a useable weft, and weaving a runner. WOW!!

Here you see her spun balls of coffee filters and next to it the woven fabric. Now that's what you call recycling!!
Next projects are from Kristina H who experimented with raffia. She used a Canaan check draft from Marguerite Davison and worked out a couple of really cool samples.

Finally I have included a couple of projects I made with plastic - the first is a bag I wove using the instructions in Handwoven November 2024.

For both of these projects, I cut white plastic grocery bags into 1" strips and used that for weft. The warp on both projects was cotton and set close. The project on the inkle loom was for our "poker hand" and I needed to "make my own weft".
So - these projects were all fun to try ------ a little quirky but its good to spread your wings and experiment. Have you been working on something unique? Let me know what it is and we can share it with everyone.
Happy New Year and Happy New Year of Weaving!!!
